Why emphasize 2011 you ask? Hasn’t making money from your blog been the same all along? Design, publish, monetize = profit right? You may have heard of Steve Pavlina, a popular self help blogger who isn’t afraid to flaunt his rather bulky income. I’m a big fan of Steve, and have followed his blog on & off for years now. Launching in 2004 just like Darren Rowse’s problogger.com, steve started his blog at a fantastic time. Launching a blog in 2011 however is poles apart from the early days of blogging. Due to many budding bloggers jumping on the bandwagon, earning a living from your online ventures in 2011 is cut-throat and incredibly difficult. With that being the case, how exactly are we supposed to earn a solid income publishing content online? After writing for a number of reasonably successful blog’s ranging from freelance writing to social media, I’d like [...Read article]

Since im lucky enough to work at home and walk Riley (my dog and resident mascot) myself, I have never given much thought to the dog walking trade. Quite foolish and short sighted of me you might say, since it’s actually providing quite a comfortable living for canine lovers all over the western world. If you’re anything like myself, you may have thought that the dog walking industry was limited to spotty adolescent’s trying to fund their next spiderman comic. After a little bit of research however, I have found an American couple who earn almost $1500 a week walking dogs and providing a latchkey pet sitting service. A little closer to home, I also contacted my good friend Claire who earns a modest £320 per week, which still leaves time to race around after her kids. Not bad eh? So let’s take a look at the facts. How [...Read article]

With every click, search, view and transaction you make online, money is being spent or of course received. I have never been terribly interested in sales since the real magic is “greasing the wheels” so to speak. If you can make a solid income without touching any products, or dealing in after-sales, then you have hit the holy grail of all entrepreneurs. So if sales are somewhat out of the question, for the time being at least, where do we go from here? Yes, it’s the age old question “advertising  vs direct affiliation” which boggles the brains of every budding webmaster. It is wise to try both avenues, or even use both in unison, however there’s no harm in hearing out someone who’s been there. Let’s look at the numbers Here’s my revenue for august 2011 over the three sites I manage (excluding this one). I use adsense and affiliate structures [...Read article]

When I cast my mind back a few years to when I first started working for myself, I chose web design as my catalyst. I had previous web design knowledge from my job at a marketing agency, so it was a simple transition. The problem was however, that web design is a long, arduous and often undervalued task. To compete with bigger businesses, I had to lower my prices and streamline the process. I still concur that photoshop, to dreamweaver, to publish is still the best way to go, although time remains a factor in this rather bulky process. I couldn’t even afford an adobe suite when I first started out, which is why I needed a cheap, versatile way of going from design to publish with the least fuss. The tools for the job I was a touch apprehensive about using a WYSIWYG editor to design for clients, as it could be classed as [...Read article]

It doesn’t matter whether you want to provide your talents on an ad hoc basis or generate a passive income via other means. If you are in employment at the moment, there is a good chance that you are underpaid, undervalued, underappreciated and more than likely living payday to payday. I remember my days of working two jobs merely to survive in a cut throat, bustling city, surrounded by thousands of people just like myself participating in the rat race. I often think “what if I decided to go it alone earlier”, where exactly would I be now? Hindsight is an evil thing, and shouldn’t be entertained, instead let me give you the 5 most important reasons to sell your talents rather than your labor. Whilst the rich get richer, you struggle. Doesn’t it bother you that at the very top of the ladder, the bosses, ceo’s and managers seem [...Read article]
